A total of 231 pupils from local schools competed in the Newby Hall X Country event. Fourteen highly tuned athletes from the Choir School eagerly awaited the race. They lined up for the start with elbows at the ready and on the starters’ whistle they sprinted forward securing good positions, Oliver Scott, Will Handley and Sean Oldham turning the first corner amongst the top twenty. The runners then continued at a steady pace on the mile course over some rough and boggy terrain. The last 400m was challenging for the competitors, their energy levels were low and the pace had dropped, but with my support and the encouragement of parents they picked off runners and improved their positions on the run in to the finish.

Our first finisher home in 9th position was Oliver Scott followed by Will Handley, 10th, Sean Oldham, 11th and Alexander Abrahams in 12th. With four to count for a team I was sure we had finished in the top three. After super performances by all the runners we returned to school adorned in medals to await verification of the results.

The results arrived and our hopes of a top three finish was confirmed with us securing second place overall, a fantastic achievement for a small school. Individual honours of top three finishing positions for each year group were awarded to Oliver Scott, Year 5 Boys 2nd place, William Handley, Year 4 Boys 3rd place and Flora Lawson Tancred, Year 3 Girls 3rd place. Well done to all the runners who represented the school.
