The Year 6 mixed team set off for Scarborough with Kenny driving the mini-bus. Arriving in Scarborough at just the right time, the team had a couple of minutes warming up and the match started. Bearing in mind the boys and girls had never played together as a team before, never mind under match conditions, they actually did really well. Ripon lost the toss so went into bat first. There was some good strong hitting from both boys and girls, but as the boys were a little unsure of the rules, they hit the ball and ran, not really taking much notice of the opposition fielding! On numerous occasions there were heart-pounding moments as the boys were running round the posts without a care in the world, the only thing in sight was fourth post and a rounder! Luckily only 2 players were stumped out and at the end of the first innings 5 rounders were scored. Bramcote then came into bat and due to a few fielding errors, the score at half time was 8 - 5 to Bramcote. After a pep-talk and a few words of advice, Ripon came into bat for the second time and scored a total of 8 ½ rounders. There was some great batting once again and the team began to think about whether to stop on a post or run on. Whilst fielding for the second time, there were some lovely catches from Emily, Isabella and Alice, reducing their team by 4 players quite early on in the innings. Fielding was tight, accurate and quick, only allowing Bramcote to score 4 ½ rounders. The final score was Ripon 13 ½, Bramcote 12 ½.
Well done to ALL players, you were great! After a quick match tea outside we set off home, stopping off in Thornton–le-Dale for an ice cream (courtesy of Kenny) and arriving back JUST in time for the girls’ rehearsal – (phew!!).
Player of the match is to be shared between Penelope Simpson for excellent fielding and Adam Lofthouse-Hill for all round sportsmanship and excellent photography! |

RCCS (90-9 off 20 overs) lost to Giggleswick (93-6) by 4 wickets.
Esteemed former England captain Mike Atherton had a very simple approach to winning the toss – if it looked like a good batting wicket he would choose to bat. If the wicket looked unpredictable, he would think for a moment, then choose to bat! Armed with this piece of cricketing wisdom, captain Harry
elected to bat after winning the toss for the first time this season - and how it improved our performance.
Cameron and Eliott made a positive start, on a perfect day for cricket, played on a splendid wicket in the most beautiful
of arenas. We at last looked like a competitive outfit. Tom Willock’s aggressive and stylish batting once again proved effective
and Tom Collinson, with 19, showed what he can do in the middle on a good strip. Laurence, too, batted with authority,
and Caleb used his forward defence to ensure we batted through the 20 overs for the first time.
In the field we looked sharper than earlier in the season, and when Giggleswick slipped to 40-4 there was a real chance of a first RCCS victory. David and Harry bowled with good control, each bagging a couple of wickets (helped by two brilliant
catches by Laurence behind the stumps), whilst Eliott’s fierce pace claimed two more victims, but unfortunately was the cause of too many extras. Cameron and Tom W each bowled sensibly, the former having his best spell of the season, pitching the ball well up, forcing the Giggleswick batsmen to play at it.
In the end, the concession of almost 40 extras, mostly in byes, proved too costly, and Giggleswick snook home with a couple of overs to spare. However, the boys should take great heart from a performance which showed determination and no little skill. Well played!
Man of the Match: Tom C for his highest ever score! |

RCCS (85 all out) lost to Woodleigh (172 for 4) by 87 runs
Having lost the toss and been sent out to field, the RCCS bowlers found it difficult to make the breakthrough against an impressive pair of openers from Woodleigh. By the time Tom W produced a great throw to run out one of them and Cameron delivered a ball of good line and length to dismiss the other, there was already over 100 on the scoreboard. Another wicket for Cameron and one for Harry were the only other rewards from a fielding and bowling session from which the boys will have gained plenty of experience.
In reply, Tom W batted with great authority and his score of 41 which included five 4s and one mighty 6, was very entertaining. Elsewhere, the highlight was Tom C’s first boundary in a proper match, as the pressure of steady bowling told and we succumbed to some poor shot selection and suicidal running between the wickets. In discussions after the match, the boys had plenty to say about their own performances and seemed to have learned much from their first outing of the season.
MoM: Tom W for his masterful batting. |

We opened our cricket season last Wednesday, with a very social game against Woodleigh. We opted to bowl and the first bowlers were very strong, with Bertie Hickey, and Charlie showing good accuracy and consistency in their deliveries. Woodleigh were a well-drilled side who were very capable of hitting fours and sixes at will.
It was great to see everyone get a bowl and whilst there were some wides the standard of bowling had clearly improved from last season. We need to work on this and focus on line and length rather than speed or spin. The area that we need to work on most is staying light on our feet and stopping the ball effectively in the field. That said, there were a couple of catches and fantastic stops from Charlie and Tom Harris. After scoring 140 runs in their 20 overs, Woodleigh came into bowl and we faced some accurate bowling but stood up excellently to the challenge. There were some great shots being played out there with boundaries from just about everyone. An area that our batsmen need to work on is their ability to adjust to different deliveries and not just stand there and swing. We also need to know when to play the right shots and not try to do too much too soon. We battled on and whilst short of Woodleigh’s total, we had a very good go at it.
We decided to play a second innings as we had rattled through the first game and we were much more competitive in the second game. We tightened up on our fielding and our batsmen really got into the swing of things. James and Alex both improved their accuracy in bowling and all our batsmen scored more runs. Again it was too much to ask to win the second game, but we were closer and learned a lot about our ability and areas to work on.
A massive ‘thank you’ goes to all the parents and loved ones who came to watch, the support was much appreciated by the boys. Another ‘thank you’ has to go to the kitchen staff and Matron who laid on a lovely spread for children and parents.
Man of the match was shared between Charlie and Bertie, for excellent all-round play. |
