The Year 6 mixed team set off for Scarborough with Kenny driving the mini-bus. Arriving in Scarborough at just the right time, the team had a couple of minutes warming up and the match started. Bearing in mind the boys and girls had never played together as a team before, never mind under match conditions, they actually did really well. Ripon lost the toss so went into bat first. There was some good strong hitting from both boys and girls, but as the boys were a little unsure of the rules, they hit the ball and ran, not really taking much notice of the opposition fielding! On numerous occasions there were heart-pounding moments as the boys were running round the posts without a care in the world, the only thing in sight was fourth post and a rounder! Luckily only 2 players were stumped out and at the end of the first innings 5 rounders were scored. Bramcote then came into bat and due to a few fielding errors, the score at half time was 8 - 5 to Bramcote. After a pep-talk and a few words of advice, Ripon came into bat for the second time and scored a total of 8 ½ rounders. There was some great batting once again and the team began to think about whether to stop on a post or run on. Whilst fielding for the second time, there were some lovely catches from Emily, Isabella and Alice, reducing their team by 4 players quite early on in the innings. Fielding was tight, accurate and quick, only allowing Bramcote to score 4 ½ rounders. The final score was Ripon 13 ½, Bramcote 12 ½. Well done to ALL players, you were great! After a quick match tea outside we set off home, stopping off in Thornton–le-Dale for an ice cream (courtesy of Kenny) and arriving back JUST in time for the girls’ rehearsal – (phew!!). Player of the match is to be shared between Penelope Simpson for excellent fielding and Adam Lofthouse-Hill for all round sportsmanship and excellent photography!

RCCS (90-9 off 20 overs) lost to Giggleswick (93-6) by 4 wickets. Esteemed former England captain Mike Atherton had a very simple approach to winning the toss – if it looked like a good batting wicket he would choose to bat. If the wicket looked unpredictable, he would think for a moment, then choose to bat! Armed with this piece of cricketing wisdom, captain Harry elected to bat after winning the toss for the first time this season - and how it improved our performance. Cameron and Eliott made a positive start, on a perfect day for cricket, played on a splendid wicket in the most beautiful of arenas. We at last looked like a competitive outfit. Tom Willock’s aggressive and stylish batting once again proved effective and Tom Collinson, with 19, showed what he can do in the middle on a good strip. Laurence, too, batted with authority, and Caleb used his forward defence to ensure we batted through the 20 overs for the first time. In the field we looked sharper than earlier in the season, and when Giggleswick slipped to 40-4 there was a real chance of a first RCCS victory. David and Harry bowled with good control, each bagging a couple of wickets (helped by two brilliant catches by Laurence behind the stumps), whilst Eliott’s fierce pace claimed two more victims, but unfortunately was the cause of too many extras. Cameron and Tom W each bowled sensibly, the former having his best spell of the season, pitching the ball well up, forcing the Giggleswick batsmen to play at it. In the end, the concession of almost 40 extras, mostly in byes, proved too costly, and Giggleswick snook home with a couple of overs to spare. However, the boys should take great heart from a performance which showed determination and no little skill. Well played! Man of the Match: Tom C for his highest ever score!

Last week’s game against Giggleswick was another clear step in our development in cricket. We showed improvements in all areas: bowling, batting and fielding. We worked well in our pairs scoring runs and stumping people out. It was a very closely contested match. Opting to field first, we set about restricting the Gigg team’s run rate by preventing boundaries and quick singles. We looked very composed in the field and showed that we understood our fielding responsibilities much more than before the season started. Good fielding from James and Tom Harris exemplified this. When we bowled Charlie and Bertie both again showed their accuracy and consistency, but it was also pleasing to see vast improvements in the actions of James, Hector and most of all Adam. We limited the oppositions total to 178, a tough target to follow but by no means beyond our grasp. Our first over was exceptional with Bertie and Johnnie, scored some excellent runs. That was unfortunately when their star player started to turn on the skill. 3 wickets on the bounce dropped our heads, but by the time he came into bowl again we had adjusted and we were able to get some good runs from that over. Indeed, after the first 3 overs we only conceded 2 more wickets. It was a good lesson for the boys to learn that at times it is best to defend their wickets than go for all out attack and build a score more steadily instead. Charlie and Charlie (our loaned player for the day) came in and made a blistering 36 runs in 4 overs. Excellent shots and running were on display and it clearly inspired our next two batters, who between them scored 25 runs to take us tantalisingly close to the opposition’s score. Alas, it was not to be. Despite determined controlled batting from our remaining 5 batters, the Gigg bowlers hit their stride and were accurate, which stopped us from really chasing the total. It was a great match to umpire and watch and a big ‘thank you’ to all the boys for working so hard and showing how much they have improved this term. Man of the match went to Adam Lofthouse-Hill for his excellent improvement in bowling and good attitude in the game.

The weather managed to hold out on Wednesday for us to play our second successive home fixture this week. Our goals from last week were to tighten up on our fielding and play sensibly when batting. The boys listened and played very well, unfortunately too well. Whilst our fielding improved immeasurably, our batting ambition dropped and we stopped taking some of the chances that fell our way. That said, it was an excellent close-fought fixture, with the end score being Moorlands 254 to Ripon 235. We stuck to our guns and made sure that everybody had a bowl, and there were again some real improvements in the accuracy and consistency of our bowlers. Special mentions need to go to Alex B, Zac, Tom Harris, Bertie for getting wickets, and Adam for stumping out an opposition batsman. My man of the match goes to Joshua Bullock for his excellent batting and running between the wickets. Hopefully next week we can combine our good fielding with some more runs when batting. The next fixture is again at home, against Giggleswick next Wednesday. All parents, relatives and friends welcome.

The U10/11 rounders team had another win yesterday against a full U11 side from Moorlands. As Moorlands hadn’t had much practice, we decided to play the match with the same rules as last week’s match against Brackenfield, allowing the girls to have more batting practice. The Ripon girls, under the captaincy of Christina Scullion, won the toss and decided to field for the first innings. Moorland girls quickly settled into batting scoring 2 whole rounders and 4 half rounders and gaining 2 rounders from no-balls. Fielding was slow at times with some rather unfortunate miss-passes. The girls soon decided to speed things up and 4 of the opposition were stumped out. Ripon came into bat and although lots of bowls were missed, the girls scored 6 half rounders, l full rounder and gained 1 ½ rounders due to no-balls. In the second innings, Ripon girls began to field brilliantly only allowing Moorlands to score 3 ½ rounders and giving ½ rounder away due to no-balls. Ripon then came into bat for their second innings and really did themselves proud. They began to get an eye for hitting and started slogging the ball in different directions sending the opposition into a fielding frenzy. All credit where it is due, Moorlands definitely fielded more quickly than Ripon girls, but due to a few poorly fielded balls Ripon came through clear winners. Ripon scored 2 ½ half rounders and 4 full rounders, gaining 1 rounders from no-balls. Special mention must go once again to Ellie Hartley for scoring the highest number of rounders and excellent fielding, and Emily Evans for improved and accurate bowling, but player of the match goes to Georgia Stuart-Mills, for superb catching and excellent fielding as back-stop.

The U10/11 rounders team set off for Brackenfield on Wednesday for their second match of the season. I was a little concerned we may be late due to the earlier fire that had broken out in The Majestic Hotel, just round the corner from Brackenfield. However, no problems on the road were encountered and the girls arrived with plenty of time for a warm-up session. As Brackenfield hadn’t played a match yet, it was decided to run the game as a training session, but with a result! The girls played two 10 minute innings, with no players actually having to sit out (tallies were kept of players out, for scoring purposes only and rounders scored); this allowed the girls to get lots of batting practice. Ripon girls proved they were great fielders, but unfortunately the batting left a little to be desired. However, the outcome was that Ripon were the clear winners with a final score of 7 ½ rounders with 8 players out, to Brackenfield’s 5 ½ rounders with 19 players out. Only two Ripon girls scored full rounders – Isabella Clutterbuck (after finally hitting the ball) and Christina Scullion who made a superb hit and ran for her life to score the first full rounder of the match. Half rounder scorers were Emily Evans (x2), Hester Churchouse, Alice Shanahan, Martha Handley and Ellie Hartley. Player of the match must go to Christina Scullion for most improved player. The girls then enjoyed a drink and a biscuit in glorious sunshine before returning to school. Well done girls.

U11 Cricket v Woodleigh PDF Print E-mail

We opened our cricket season last Wednesday, with a very social game against Woodleigh. We opted to bowl and the first bowlers were very strong, with Bertie Hickey, and Charlie showing good accuracy and consistency in their deliveries. Woodleigh were a well-drilled side who were very capable of hitting fours and sixes at will. It was great to see everyone get a bowl and whilst there were some wides the standard of bowling had clearly improved from last season. We need to work on this and focus on line and length rather than speed or spin. The area that we need to work on most is staying light on our feet and stopping the ball effectively in the field. That said, there were a couple of catches and fantastic stops from Charlie and Tom Harris. After scoring 140 runs in their 20 overs, Woodleigh came into bowl and we faced some accurate bowling but stood up excellently to the challenge. There were some great shots being played out there with boundaries from just about everyone. An area that our batsmen need to work on is their ability to adjust to different deliveries and not just stand there and swing. We also need to know when to play the right shots and not try to do too much too soon. We battled on and whilst short of Woodleigh’s total, we had a very good go at it. We decided to play a second innings as we had rattled through the first game and we were much more competitive in the second game. We tightened up on our fielding and our batsmen really got into the swing of things. James and Alex both improved their accuracy in bowling and all our batsmen scored more runs. Again it was too much to ask to win the second game, but we were closer and learned a lot about our ability and areas to work on. A massive ‘thank you’ goes to all the parents and loved ones who came to watch, the support was much appreciated by the boys. Another ‘thank you’ has to go to the kitchen staff and Matron who laid on a lovely spread for children and parents. Man of the match was shared between Charlie and Bertie, for excellent all-round play.

RCCS (85 all out) lost to Woodleigh (172 for 4) by 87 runs Having lost the toss and been sent out to field, the RCCS bowlers found it difficult to make the breakthrough against an impressive pair of openers from Woodleigh. By the time Tom W produced a great throw to run out one of them and Cameron delivered a ball of good line and length to dismiss the other, there was already over 100 on the scoreboard. Another wicket for Cameron and one for Harry were the only other rewards from a fielding and bowling session from which the boys will have gained plenty of experience. In reply, Tom W batted with great authority and his score of 41 which included five 4s and one mighty 6, was very entertaining. Elsewhere, the highlight was Tom C’s first boundary in a proper match, as the pressure of steady bowling told and we succumbed to some poor shot selection and suicidal running between the wickets. In discussions after the match, the boys had plenty to say about their own performances and seemed to have learned much from their first outing of the season. MoM: Tom W for his masterful batting.

Our first match of the season was great fun to watch. The girls played really well, considering not having had much practice and never having played together as a team. The opponents won the toss and chose to field first. Ripon scored 10 ½ rounders, with 6 players being either stumped or caught out. Terrington then came into bat and scored 11 rounders but only two players were caught out. The second innings saw Ripon girls score a further 7 rounders and Terrington 10 rounders, leaving the final score Terrington 21, Ripon 17 ½ . There was some excellent catching and batting from the girls, but player of the match goes to Ellie Hartley for consistently excellent batting and fielding.

The girls played a great netball match against Cundall on Wednesday. It was probably one of the best matches the girls have played this term. The final result of 12-7 to Cundall, definitely didn’t represent how the girls played. The first two quarters were end to end, with some great goals being scored by Alice. There was some fabulous defending from Ellie and great team play generally. As we had too many girls the players had to be rotated and the third quarter didn’t go as well as the first two, with Cundall scoring 5 goals in that part of play alone. After another change, the girls settled back into end to end, fast play with some great passes. After a lovely match tea, Ripon girls were praised on their hospitality and manners from the opposition coach. Having said goodbye to Cundall, the girls then went back onto the court for a quick game of fun rounders, ready for next term. A special mention to Emily Evans, who was ‘coach’ for the match, giving out great advice and tips at each break of play. Man of the match goes to Alice Shanahan for her goal scoring, team work, and defending.

Well, I suppose there was no reason why our luck had to change, and this final game of the season ended with the same feelings of frustration and disappointment that we have experienced throughout the term. Despite dominating large parts of the match, Eliott in particular working hard in midfield, the school side failed to convert its many chances - post, bar and excellent goalkeeping preventing Cameron and Tom W from scoring on several occasions. So, the second and final half of the season began with RCCS 2-0 down. More determined and well organised team play, good defending from David and Harry, and a couple of magnificent saves from Laurence suggested that a come-back may be possible, but two more goals from Bramcote finished off our challenge. The great shame is that this hard working team didn’t manage the victory their efforts deserved. They played good football, worked for each other and never gave up. Perhaps the cricket season will yield the longed for win. Man of the Match: Laurence, for some very brave goalkeeping

Despite the scoreline, this was another pleasing performance from the Under 13 side. Good passing, committed tackling and hard work were all evident in a game that was decided by the away team’s ability to finish off chances. Two down at half-time, we were still very much in with a shout of a positive result. Alas, the Moorland’s substitute on the left wing scored twice inside the first couple of second half minutes, his tricky dribbling and lethal left boot bamboozling the Ripon defence. After this, we settled down and dominated large parts of the game. David and Laurence defended with composure whilst Harry looked untroubled in goal. Going forward, Tom W provided pace whilst Eliott and Cameron added the guile. A late fifth goal from Moorlands was very unjust. Now the Under 13s have just one more opportunity to gain the win their efforts deserve. … here’s hoping! Man of the Match: Harry for his calm authority in goal. Mr Carter

U11s A & B Team Football v. Bramcote PDF Print E-mail

We made the long trip over to Scarborough in glorious sunshine, full of confidence and enthusiasm after hour excellent display last week. We arrived and got straight into action, the ‘A’ team, playing with passion, energy and skill, matched the Bramcote boys and the first half was well balanced. The ‘B’ team game was also very competitive but I believe we had the edge on our opposition and actually went into half time in the lead after an excellent goal from Guy Hollins. After a few changes we got back into the action and the ‘A‘ team pushed for goal, leave some space at the back which Bramcote capitalised on and completed an excellent passing move to put them into the lead. Over on the ‘B’ team pitch we continued to hassle our opposition at every opportunity and despite getting in each other’s way a bit, we were playing some nice football. Josh had an excellent game in goal and didn’t put a foot wrong throughout the match. With the character and energy that we saw in our last match against Giggleswick we pressed forward to score an equaliser for the ‘A’ team. We came very close on several occasions, with Tom Harris always looking dangerous and Bertie putting in another commanding display in defence we looked set to score. Unfortunately we still need to tighten up our team defence and learn to stay as a unit rather than individuals. It was for this reason that Bramcote got their second goal. Still, this didn’t stop us. We pressed on and finally got our reward with an excellent goal by Tom to bring the score to 2-1 in the final minutes. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be our day and the result remained the same. With the ‘B’ team game still raging to its climax we showed no signs of relenting as our boys hoofed the ball clear at every opportunity. The final whistle went and the boys were delighted to end up 1-0 winners. ‘Man of the match’ awards go to Tom Harris and Josh Bullock for excellent displays of skill and effort.
