The Year 6 mixed team set off for Scarborough with Kenny driving the mini-bus. Arriving in Scarborough at just the right time, the team had a couple of minutes warming up and the match started. Bearing in mind the boys and girls had never played together as a team before, never mind under match conditions, they actually did really well. Ripon lost the toss so went into bat first. There was some good strong hitting from both boys and girls, but as the boys were a little unsure of the rules, they hit the ball and ran, not really taking much notice of the opposition fielding! On numerous occasions there were heart-pounding moments as the boys were running round the posts without a care in the world, the only thing in sight was fourth post and a rounder! Luckily only 2 players were stumped out and at the end of the first innings 5 rounders were scored. Bramcote then came into bat and due to a few fielding errors, the score at half time was 8 - 5 to Bramcote. After a pep-talk and a few words of advice, Ripon came into bat for the second time and scored a total of 8 ½ rounders. There was some great batting once again and the team began to think about whether to stop on a post or run on. Whilst fielding for the second time, there were some lovely catches from Emily, Isabella and Alice, reducing their team by 4 players quite early on in the innings. Fielding was tight, accurate and quick, only allowing Bramcote to score 4 ½ rounders. The final score was Ripon 13 ½, Bramcote 12 ½.
Well done to ALL players, you were great! After a quick match tea outside we set off home, stopping off in Thornton–le-Dale for an ice cream (courtesy of Kenny) and arriving back JUST in time for the girls’ rehearsal – (phew!!).

RCCS (90-9 off 20 overs) lost to Giggleswick (93-6) by 4 wickets.
Esteemed former England captain Mike Atherton had a very simple approach to winning the toss – if it looked like a good batting wicket he would choose to bat. If the wicket looked unpredictable, he would think for a moment, then choose to bat! Armed with this piece of cricketing wisdom, captain Harry
elected to bat after winning the toss for the first time this season - and how it improved our performance.
Cameron and Eliott made a positive start, on a perfect day for cricket, played on a splendid wicket in the most beautiful
of arenas. We at last looked like a competitive outfit. Tom Willock’s aggressive and stylish batting once again proved effective
and Tom Collinson, with 19, showed what he can do in the middle on a good strip. Laurence, too, batted with authority,
and Caleb used his forward defence to ensure we batted through the 20 overs for the first time.
In the field we looked sharper than earlier in the season, and when Giggleswick slipped to 40-4 there was a real chance of a first RCCS victory. David and Harry bowled with good control, each bagging a couple of wickets (helped by two brilliant
catches by Laurence behind the stumps), whilst Eliott’s fierce pace claimed two more victims, but unfortunately was the cause of too many extras. Cameron and Tom W each bowled sensibly, the former having his best spell of the season, pitching the ball well up, forcing the Giggleswick batsmen to play at it.
In the end, the concession of almost 40 extras, mostly in byes, proved too costly, and Giggleswick snook home with a couple of overs to spare. However, the boys should take great heart from a performance which showed determination and no little skill. Well played!

Last week’s game against Giggleswick was another clear step in our development in cricket. We showed improvements in all areas: bowling, batting and fielding. We worked well in our pairs scoring runs and stumping people out. It was a very closely contested match. Opting to field first, we set about restricting the Gigg team’s run rate by preventing boundaries and quick singles. We looked very composed in the field and showed that we understood our fielding responsibilities much more than before the season started. Good fielding from James and Tom Harris exemplified this. When we bowled Charlie and Bertie both again showed their accuracy and consistency, but it was also pleasing to see vast improvements in the actions of James, Hector and most of all Adam.
We limited the oppositions total to 178, a tough target to follow but by no means beyond our grasp. Our first over was exceptional with Bertie and Johnnie, scored some excellent runs. That was unfortunately when their star player started to turn on the skill. 3 wickets on the bounce dropped our heads, but by the time he came into bowl again we had adjusted and we were able to get some good runs from that over. Indeed, after the first 3 overs we only conceded 2 more wickets. It was a good lesson for the boys to learn that at times it is best to defend their wickets than go for all out attack and build a score more steadily instead.
Charlie and Charlie (our loaned player for the day) came in and made a blistering 36 runs in 4 overs. Excellent shots and running were on display and it clearly inspired our next two batters, who between them scored 25 runs to take us tantalisingly close to the opposition’s score. Alas, it was not to be. Despite determined controlled batting from our remaining 5 batters, the Gigg bowlers hit their stride and were accurate, which stopped us from really chasing the total.
It was a great match to umpire and watch and a big ‘thank you’ to all the boys for working so hard and showing how much they have improved this term.
Man of the match went to Adam Lofthouse-Hill for his excellent improvement in bowling and good attitude in the game. |
