Welcome

Mrs P BurtonWelcome to Ripon Cathedral Choir School website. Browsing through the following pages you will gain a glimpse of life at our unique school.

Surrounded by six acres of beautiful countryside, mainly laid out to sports fields, the school offers a modern education based on traditional values for boys and girls from Nursery to Year 8. The main house, originally the pavilion for Ripon Race Course, has been developed into a homely boarding house for a small, flexible boarding community.

The Cathedral Choir School is a non-selective Prep School and a registered Charity. The aims of the school include the intention to provide specialist teaching within a Christian ethos, encouraging every child to succeed in whichever discipline suits them best, be it academic subjects, sport, music or the arts. Children join our Nursery at the age of three and are taught predominately by their class teacher through the Foundation Stage to Year 4. Music, IT, French and PE are taught by specialist subject teachers who encourage the children to become responsible independent learners. From Form 5 upwards all subjects are taught by specialist teachers and Form Tutors oversee the pastoral care.

The Choir School has a reputation for high academic standards and a very high success rate at 11+ and 13+ examinations. A wide extra curricular programme supports and develops the individuals, helping them to reach their full potential in academic and non-academic subjects.

Music has always been an important part of the curriculum. All the boy choristers and many of the girl choristers are educated here, supported by scholarships and bursaries. Over 80% of the school population take a musical instrument, this is however not compulsory and the children’s pleasure in music is allowed to develop naturally. Sport, drama and creative talents are encouraged to the same degree.

A special feature of our school is the small class size. A maximum of sixteen children per class ensures that each child receives individual attention at all times.

We are a happy school where self respect, commitment and care for others are nurtured. A school where every child is special, every child matters.

Do pay us a visit; you will be made most welcome
